Energy Balance

The food and drinks we consume on a day to day basis all contain energy, with the exception of water and vitamins, we call this energy our calories. Every one of us has different daily energy or 'calorie' requirements, to account for our body functions, digestion of foodexercise, walking, etc etc.

When you consume more energy/calories than you require for these combined daily functions over a prolonged period, you will put on weight, when you consume less energy than you require for these daily functions over a prolonged period, you will lose weight. If you consume roughly the same calories as you burn, you will roughly maintain weight. The below diagram shows how this works.

If your goal is to lose weight primarily, you need to be in a negative energy balance. So your energy in needs to be less than your energy out, over a prolonged period. There are methods we can use to make this easier which I will discuss more in future posts.
